The Water Research Institute's mission is to foster world-leading interdisciplinary research that will have strong impact and be used as evidence by decision makers. We do this by providing a creative environment where researchers from different disciplines co-design and co-deliver research with stakeholders and end-users to provide integrated understanding and solutions to tackle global water challenges.

The Cardiff University Water Research Institute draws from over 60 members to bring together groups of researchers to explore 6 interdisciplinary water themes:

Taking a catchment-based approach to understanding the resilience of ecosystems and ecosystem services.

Optimising water resource efficiency and treatment with a whole-systems approach.

Digital solutions for water risk management
Integrating sensors, data platforms, models and end users to improve how we manage water resources.
Water for health, well-being and livelihoods
Applying a One Health approach to the role of resilient freshwaters in community health and well-being.
Plastics from source to sink
Providing evidence to understand and tackle the plastics challenge in freshwaters.
Bringing together stakeholder perspectives and research challenges with academic expertise from across Cardiff University, we can address complex water issues together.
